Chapter Programs
The Mu Beta Chapter serves in a variety of ways from mentoring young women on pursuing higher education to promoting a healthy lifestyle. Focusing specifically on the most recent 2014-2018 program, Mu Beta Chapter members were actively involved in many service projects and supported Launching New Dimensions of Service℠ (LNDS) targets, programs, and Community Impact Days. Mu Beta Chapter members are currently implementing the new 2018-2022 program, Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service.
In the past several years, the chapter has been active in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Pink Goes Red for Heart Health Day, AKA 1908 Playground Project℠, ASCEND Youth Enrichment Program℠, One Million Backpacks℠ Initiative, Think HBCU℠ initiative, Alzheimer’s Disease and Caregiver Support initiative, Minority Mental Health Awareness, Family Seasonal Wraps℠, Financial Responsibility initiative, Acts of Green Program℠, and Global Impact initiatives through Africare and the UNA-USA partnership. Mu Beta Chapter members make a positive impact and lasting impression in the Milwaukee and Marquette communities.
The Mu Beta Chapter stresses the importance of health throughout the year. In 2015, the chapter partnered with the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center to offer free HIV testing to Marquette University. Mu Beta Chapter members worked diligently to get this event approved and upheld the chapter's legacy of being the first organization to offer HIV testing on the campus. Annually, Mu Beta Chapter members host an annual AKArobics as part of its heart health awareness programs. Additionally, chapter members annually participate in the National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) walk, which supports the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. Chapter members also support the Walk for Alzheimer’s where they show their support for individuals who have Alzheimer’s disease, respect for those who have passed away from the disease, and admiration for the people who care for them. Stressing the importance of mental health among minority groups gives Mu Beta the chance to invest in the community.
The Mu Beta Chapter feels passionately about mentoring young women. In April 2015, the chapter partnered with Hope Christian Elementary and hosted a girls-only lock-in for the 5th and 6th grade classes. Chapter members spoke with the girls about body image, hygiene, the importance of education, self-esteem, sisterhood, and friendship. The group of girls received gift bags filled with hygiene products. They created a pledge to live by that emphasized respecting themselves, their bodies, their minds, and their friends. Maintaining these relationships and mentoring the young women is something very important to our chapter.
The Mu Beta Chapter implemented its beloved Sorority’s ThinkHBCU℠ initiative in which members helped high school seniors from St. Vincent High School write college entrance letters and mentor them on the importance of pursing higher education. The chapter worked one-on-one with students to perfect their personal statements and answer any questions they had about college in a writing workshop. This showed St. Vincent seniors that they have people who care about their futures. Mu Beta also presented information regarding historically black colleges and universities, as well as scholarship opportunities at Destiny High School's Boys and Girls Club in March 2016. In addition, by partnering with its sponsoring graduate Chapter, Epsilon Kappa Omega, Chapter members present college readiness and S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) to ASCEND℠ students who are in ninth through twelve grade. They also increase the students' global awareness through the Model UN mini-simulations through Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's partnership with UNA-USA. For the final 2018 cycle of ASCEND℠, Mu Beta Chapter will co-host sessions at Milwaukee Academy of Science.
The Mu Beta Chapter's successful environmental ownership programs include its annual AKA 1908 Playgrounds Project℠. In March 2015, members beautified the Siefert Elementary School playground by repainting the hopscotch area and the map of the United States. In March 2016, members renewed and refreshed the area surrounding the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Center by cleaning debris from the park. In March 2017, members organized indoor spaces for City on the Hill's philanthropic programs. Chapter members also beautify a selected Milwaukee Public School location each Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Impact (January) by partnering with City Year Milwaukee and other local organizations.
The Mu Beta Chapter has partnered with the Milwaukee Rescue Mission for the past three years. Mu Beta has donated more than 700 seasonal wrap items for the summer and winter months to help homeless families at the Joy House. The chapter and its partners also donated more than 200 backpacks as part of the One Million Backpacks℠ campaign to several local charities to assist families with their educational needs for the 2015-2017 school years. Finally, Mu Beta supports Feeding America on Childhood Hunger Awareness Day each October. In 2015, members sorted, packaged, and boxed more than 8,401 pounds of food which provides 7,001 meals. In 2016, members sorted and boxed more than 3,500 pounds of food. In 2017, members sorted and boxed more than 5,000 pounds of food, which equates to 6,000 meals. In June-July 2018, the Mu Beta Chapter was able to provide more than 2,300 meals to youth during the summer months via a grant received from the AKA Educational Advancement Foundation and in partnership with Campus Kitchens at Marquette University.
Members of the Mu Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® received an opportunity to join an elite group of women who have the power to change society. They believe that they should give as they receive and serve with a kind heart and gentle hand. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® is the vessel by which Mu Beta Chapter members do this at a greater capacity. They will continue to lift up Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and remain "Supreme in Service to All Mankind."
